OBJECTIVES Cigarette smoking causes cardiovascular (CV) disease, but the relative roles of nicotine and other components of tobacco smoke remain unclear. We investigated the effect of stopping smoking, by using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), on haemorheology parameters. DESIGN Open, parallel-group trial (intervention group and control smokers). Ten healthy lactating sows were given single IV injections of 5 to 10 IU of oxytocin and single IV or IM injections of 0.2 to 0.6 mg of deamino-1-monocarba-(2-O-methyltyrosine)-oxytocin [d(COMOT)]. Studies were done with d(COMOT) concerning the dose-response relationship, the influence of the lactation stage on the duration of the milk let-down effect, and(More)
OBJECTIVES Cigarette smoking causes cardiovascular (CV) disease, but the relative roles of nicotine and other components of tobacco smoke remain unclear. We investigated the effect of stopping smoking by using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) on hemorheology parameters, on the cotinine and thiocyanate plasma concentrations and the exhaled carbon monoxide(More)
The effect of flunixin meglumine on prostaglandin synthesis and metabolism was evaluated in the pig in vivo. It was found that the prostaglandin metabolite, 15-ketodihydro-PGF2 alpha, was decreased in the peripheral circulation within 20 min of injection of the drug. In therapeutic doses in the pig the drug had no effect on the metabolism of PGF2 alpha.(More)
This open study assessed the effects of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) on the normalizing of exhaled carbon monoxide (CO), transcutaneous partial oxygen tension (tcpO(2)), plasma cotinine and thiocyanate levels, and cardiovascular risk markers in abstinent subjects compared with untreated smokers after 4, 8, 12, and 26 weeks. The trial enrolled 197(More)
Endotoxin of Gram-negative bacteria was orally administered in 5 female pigs and 8 male goats. Two of the gilts were pregnant. A solution of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Enterobacter agglomerans was mixed into the feed ration of the pigs (40 mg/animal), and given by gastric tube into the rumen of the goats (1-20 mg/animal). Jugular venous blood was collected(More)
The objective of the study was to examine the effect of endotoxin on early pregnancy in gilts and to test the potential of flunixin meglumine (FM), a cyclooxygenase inhibitor, to counteract abortifacient action of the endotoxin. Ten gilts at 30 days gestation were used in the experiment. Eight were injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Salmonella(More)
Myometrial samples were biopsied from pigs at early pregnancy, within 12 h after initiated abortion and at first dioestrus post-abortion. Abortion was induced either with an isolated gram-negative bacterial endotoxin or the prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha analog cloprostenol. The tissues were quantitatively examined for gap junctions in electron micrographs.(More)
