The results of the first comprehensive freshwater malacological survey performed in the Baixada Maranhense Microregion indicate that the study area is epidemiologically important due to the presence of two natural vectors of schistosomiasis and the active transmission of schismiasis, which was confirmed in the infected specimen that was collected in this study.
HISTOPATHOLOGY OF Holochilus brasiliensis(RODENTIA: CRICETIDAE)INFECTED WITH Schistosoma mansoni(SCHISTOSOMATIDA: SCHISTOSOMATIDAE)

There appeared to be a different response to parasite invasion according to host sex, as the livers of infected males were seen to contain parasite eggs with moderate or intense granulomas, whereas females showed slight or moderated tissue damage.

It has been shown that wild rodents with semi-aquatic habits are capable to establish a productive infection of this parasite, and these wild rodents are likely also to be capable to spread the disease in endemic areas.

For the first time, it was proven that ethanolic extracts of P. arboreum and J. gossypiifolia leaves are biologically active against cercariae and adult worms of S. mansoni in vitro.

Toxicity bioassays using Danio rerio (zebrafish) revealed that these animals were less susceptible to latex than planorbids, and it is important to perform other toxicity tests to ensure the feasibility of using latex to control populations of mollusks that contribute to schistosomiasis transmission.

The H. sciureus rodent shows a high natural infection rate for S. mansoni in the flooded fields of São Bento, regardless of the weather station, capture distance, and biological aspects, and it is demonstrated that it may inhabit a much more extensive area that is currently described in the literature.

It was shown that infection in H. sciureus females provides a favorable environment for the development of adult worms, despite impairing the parasite fecundity, and this rodent may be an excellent biological model for S. mansoni experimental infections.
