Rare nodular malignant melanomas that may escape detection in routine histological sections due to the lack of a prominent intraepidermal component, sharp lateral circumscription and evidence of partial maturation with descent in the dermis are described.

HMB‐45 recognizes stimulated melanocytes
HMB‐45 is staining an antigen which appears in adult melanocytes during stimulation and in fetal skin, as well as in melanomas, suggesting a melanocyte response to a plasma factor, or other endothelial cell derived factor.

Three lesions from three patients, in which histologic examination revealed a well-circumscribed dermal nodule composed of spindled cells with focal nuclear pseudo-inclusions, provide evidence that CD34 expression can occur in sclerotic fibromas, either solitary or associated with Cowden syndrome.
