Plant/microbe cooperation for electricity generation in a rice paddy field
- N. Kaku, Natsuki Yonezawa, Y. Kodama, Kazuya Watanabe
- Environmental ScienceApplied Microbiology and Biotechnology
- 5 March 2008
The results suggest that the paddy-field electricity-generation system was an ecological solar cell in which the plant photosynthesis was coupled to the microbial conversion of organics to electricity.
Diversity and abundance of bacteria in an underground oil-storage cavity
- Kazuya Watanabe, Y. Kodama, N. Kaku
- MedicineBMC Microbiology
- 28 August 2002
Bacteria inhabiting the oil-storage cavity were unexpectedly diverse and a phylogenetic affiliation of cloned 16S rDNA sequences suggests that bacteria exhibiting different types of energy metabolism coexist in the cavity.
Rhizomicrobium palustre gen. nov., sp. nov., a facultatively anaerobic, fermentative stalked bacterium in the class Alphaproteobacteria isolated from rice plant roots.
It is proposed that the strains isolated from roots of living rice plants in an irrigated rice-field in Japan be assigned in the novel genus and species as Rhizomicrobium palustre gen. nov., and formed a novel deep branch in the phylogenetic trees constructed.
Bacteroides graminisolvens sp. nov., a xylanolytic anaerobe isolated from a methanogenic reactor treating cattle waste.
- Tomomi Nishiyama, A. Ueki, N. Kaku, Kazuya Watanabe, K. Ueki
- BiologyInternational Journal of Systematic and…
- 1 August 2009
On the basis of data from the phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic analyses, strain XDT-1T represents a novel species of the genus Bacteroides, for which the name Bactroides graminisolvens sp.
Suppression of spinach wilt disease by biological soil disinfestation incorporated with Brassica juncea plants in association with changes in soil bacterial communities

Diversity, Abundance, and Activity of Archaeal Populations in Oil-Contaminated Groundwater Accumulated at the Bottom of an Underground Crude Oil Storage Cavity
- Kazuya Watanabe, Y. Kodama, N. Hamamura, N. Kaku
- Environmental ScienceApplied and Environmental Microbiology
- 1 August 2002
Results suggest that limited species of novel archaea were enriched in the oil storage cavity, and an estimate of specific methane production rates suggests that they were active methanogens.
Changes and recovery of soil bacterial communities influenced by biological soil disinfestation as compared with chloropicrin-treatment
- S. Mowlick, Takashi Inoue, T. Takehara, N. Kaku, K. Ueki, A. Ueki
- Biology, MedicineAMB Express
- 17 August 2013
Soil bacterial composition, as influenced by biological soil disinfestation associated with biomass incorporation was investigated to observe the effects of the treatment on the changes and recovery of the microbial community in a commercial greenhouse setting and showed members of the Firmicutes became dominant in the soil bacterial community after the BSD-treatment.
Proliferation of diversified clostridial species during biological soil disinfestation incorporated with plant biomass under various conditions
- S. Mowlick, T. Takehara, N. Kaku, K. Ueki, A. Ueki
- Biology, MedicineApplied Microbiology and Biotechnology
- 1 September 2013
Based on the clone library analysis, phylogenetically diverse clostridial species appeared exceedingly dominant in the bacterial community of BSD soil incorporated with Brassica plants or wheat bran, in which the pathogen was suppressed completely.
Descriptions of Anaerotaenia torta gen. nov., sp. nov. and Anaerocolumna cellulosilytica gen. nov., sp. nov. isolated from a methanogenic reactor of cattle waste and reclassification of Clostridium…
- A. Ueki, Yoshimi Ohtaki, N. Kaku, K. Ueki
- BiologyInternational Journal of Systematic and…
- 1 August 2016
Phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses suggested that these two isolates should be assigned to novel genera other than the genus Clostridium, and thus the genera Anaerotaenia gen. nov. and Anaerocolumna gen.nov.
Anaerocella delicata gen. nov., sp. nov., a strictly anaerobic bacterium in the phylum Bacteroidetes isolated from a methanogenic reactor of cattle farms.
- Kunihiro Abe, A. Ueki, Yoshimi Ohtaki, N. Kaku, Kazuya Watanabe, K. Ueki
- BiologyJournal of General and Applied Microbiology
- 2012
A strictly anaerobic bacterial strain isolated from rice-straw residue in a methanogenic reactor treating waste from cattle farms in Japan was isolated and grew rather well on PY agar slants supplemented with a B-vitamin mixture as well as sugars and made translucent and glossy colonies.
