Ovarian follicular atresia in two teleost species: a histological and ultrastructural study.
It is suggested that, in captive conditions, follicular atresia is shorter in total-spawning fishes when compared to those showing partial spawning, and that it has no apparent deleterious effects on induced reproduction in the subsequent cycle.
Early development of the silver catfish Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) (Pisces:Heptapteridae) from the São Francisco River Basin, Brazil.
- Marcelo Pimenta De Amorim, B. C. Gomes, Y. S. Martins, Yoshimi Sato, E. Rizzo, N. Bazzoli
E egg characteristics, oocyte surface ultrastructure and histology of larval ontogenesis until whole yolk resorption were described for the first time for this species, indicating a need for exogenous feeding in R. quelen culture and management.
Bioaccumulation of mercury, cadmium, zinc, chromium, and lead in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues of a large commercially valuable catfish species from Brazil.

The findings indicate that in a river network where certain areas are connected to other areas with high rates of environmental pollutants, people should be cautious about the regular consumption of fish, even when the fish consumed are caught in stretches of the basin where contamination levels are considered low, since many of the freshwater fish with high commercial value are migratory.
Morphofunctional organization of the male reproductive system of the catfish Iheringichthys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) (Siluriformes:Pimelodidae).
An anatomical, histological and ultrastructural study was made of the reproductive system and spermatogenesis of Iheringichthys labrosus. The testis are digitiform and consist of a sperm atogenic…
Cortical alveoli in oocytes of freshwater neotropical teleost fish
Variations in the morphology and contents of the CA may be related to different mechanisms of polyspermy blockade as well as to many of the groups studies.
Oocyte surface in four teleost fish species postspawning and fertilization
Investigation of the surface characteristics of oocytes of four teleost species from the Sao Francisco river suggested that the mucous coat of surubim oocytes play a functional role during fertilization, which may also contribute significantly to phylogenetic studies.
Comparative morphology of the gonadal structure related to reproductive strategies in six species of neotropical catfishes (Teleostei: Siluriformes)

The reproductive system observed in Neotropical catfishes showed a relationship associated with the type of fertilization and the reproductive strategies of the six species studied.
Reproduction of the surubim catfish (Pisces, Pimelodidae) in the São Francisco River, Pirapora Region, Minas Gerais, Brazil
The reproductive biology of the surubim, P. coruscans of the Sao Francisco River, in the Pirapora region was studied from December/98 to November/99. Reproduction occurred between October and January…
Biology of eggs, embryos and larvae of Rhinelepis aspera (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) (Pisces: Siluriformes)
The total absorption of the yolk sac occurred during the fifth day indicating the need for an exogenous food supply, and essential information for the successful breeding and management of the promising R. aspera is presented.
Early development of Brycon orthotaenia (Pisces: Characidae)
Brycon orthotaenia is an important fish for commercial and sport fishing and may reach 7 kg in body weight; it is endangered in some regions of Brazil's São Francisco River Basin; Breeders were subjected to spawning induction and oocytes and semen were obtained by manual extrusion and fertilization was carried out using the dry method.
