Data indicate a close evolutionary relationship between Parmales, Bolidophyceae, and diatoms and should accelerate isolation of other Parmales species, helping to establish their diversity and aiding quantitative study of their role in oceanic processes.
Diversity and oceanic distribution of the Parmales (Bolidophyceae), a picoplanktonic group closely related to diatoms

The phylogenetic data led to formally emend the taxonomy of this group to include the Parmales within the Bolidophyceae, to combine Bolidomonas within Triparma and to define a novel species, Triparma eleuthera sp.
Seasonal variation in abundance and species composition of the Parmales community in the Oyashio region, western North Pacific
- Mutsuo Ichinomiya, A. Kuwata
- Environmental Science
- 6 July 2015
The Parmales community grew in the surface layer before becoming evenly distributed with depth in winter and spring, and during summer and into autumn, the population survived under the pycnocline.
Sequencing and analysis of the complete organellar genomes of Parmales, a closely related group to Bacillariophyta (diatoms)
- Naoyuki Tajima, K. Saitoh, N. Sato
- BiologyCurrent Genetics

The results suggest that the characteristics of the organellar genomes of T. laevis are similar and conserve ancestral characteristics more than Bacillariophyta.
Diet niche segregation of co-occurring larval stages of mesopelagic and commercially important fishes in the Osumi Strait assessed through morphological, DNA metabarcoding, and stable isotope analyses
The Osumi Strait and its neighboring waters are major spawning grounds for commercially important small pelagic and coastal fish in the Pacific coastal area of Japan. Mesopelagic fish larvae are also…

The vertical and regional distribution of Triparma laevis (Parmales), a siliceous picosized eukaryotic marine phytoplankton species, was investigated during summer off the south coast of Hokkaido,…

Short-term changes in a microplankton community in the Chukchi Sea during autumn: consequences of a strong wind event
- Naoya Yokoi, K. Matsuno, T. Kikuchi
- Environmental Science
- 15 June 2015
It is conjectured that atmospheric turbulences, such as that of an SWE, may supply sufficient nutrients to the surface layer that subsequently enhance the small bloom under the weak stratification of the Chukchi Sea Shelf during the autumn months.
Structure of the summer under fast ice microbial community near Syowa Station, eastern Antarctica

The results suggest that the pelagic food webs under the extensive ice-covered areas in coastal Antarctic regions are not short but complex.
