An adjusted rank correlation test is proposed as a technique for identifying publication bias in a meta-analysis, and its operating characteristics are evaluated via simulations. The test statistic is a direct statistical analogue of the popular "funnel-graph." The number of component studies in the meta-analysis, the nature of the selection mechanism, the… (More)
This study investigated the relationship among measurements of friction, the biomechanics of gait, and actual slip and fall events. The goal was to develop a method for estimating the probability of slips and falls based on measurements of available friction and required friction. Five subjects wearing safety harnesses walked down a ramp at various angles… (More)
Type 1 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17beta-HSD1) is a key steroidogenic enzyme that catalyses the reduction of steroid estrone into the most potent endogenous estrogen estradiol using the cofactor NAD(P)H. Bisubstrate inhibition is a good way to enhance the potency of inhibitors of cofactor-assisted enzymes. The design of a bisubstrate inhibitor of… (More)
The compound 6-propionyl-2-(N,N-dimethyl)-aminonaphthalene (Prodan), an efficient fluorescent probe for proteins, is shown to bind to tubulin. Detailed experiments on fluorescence enhancement, anisotropy and energy transfer were carried out to unravel the nature of Prodan-tubulin interaction and the Prodan-binding site on tubulin. It was found that Prodan… (More)
Protein crystal growth (PCG) remains the bottleneck of crystallography despite many decades of study. The nucleation zone in the two-dimensional-phase diagram has been used to evaluate the relative crystallizability of proteins, which is expressed as a percentage over the phase area delineated by experimental protein and precipitating agent concentration… (More)
5,5'-Bis[8-(phenylamino)-1-naphthalenesulfonate] (bis-ANS), the fluorescent probe which binds to tubulin, inhibits its assembly into microtubules [Horowitz et al. (1984) J. Biol. Chem. 259, 14647-14650]. The results described in this paper demonstrate that bis-ANS is quite distinct from other well-known microtubule inhibitors in its specificity of action.… (More)
A quick and sensitive method has been developed for the chemical detection of nitrous derivatives discharged from a firearm. Detection by fluorescence is especially suitable for blood-stained articles such as clothing, which often give confusing results when the conventional methods are used.
