Enterovirus 71 (EV71) strains from children were characterized by full-length VP1 nucleotide sequencing. Out of 22 clinical specimens, five isolates identified as EV71 were recovered by virus isolation. The VP1 sequences of the five isolates had more than 97.4% sequence identity with prototype virus BrCr, clustering in the genotype A lineage. This(More)
The lateral root of Aconitum carmichaelii Debx is named "Fuzi" which is widely distributed across Asia and North America and has been used to relieve joint pain and treat rheumatic diseases for over two thousand years. However, it has very narrow therapeutic ranges and despite the toxicological risk, its usage remains very high. A traditional Chinese(More)
We find evidence that black soot aerosols deposited on Tibetan glaciers have been a significant contributing factor to observed rapid glacier retreat. Reduced black soot emissions, in addition to reduced greenhouse gases, may be required to avoid demise of Himalayan glaciers and retain the benefits of glaciers for seasonal fresh water supplies.
Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is an inherited disorder, with phagocytes failing to produce antimicrobial superoxide due to deficient NADPH oxidase activity. Mutations in the gene encoding CYBB are responsible for the majority of the CGD cases. To date, there have been no reports on large samples of children with CGD in China. Therefore, in this study,(More)
Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is genetically stable; and various schemes for the genotyping of VZV based on restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs), PCR, and sequencing have been developed. At least three major genotypes have been recognized among VZV isolates or clinical samples from different locations around the world; however, few data were(More)
The tegument protein pp28 of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is essential for the assembly of infectious HCMV virions, but how it functions during the process of HCMV tegumentation and envelopment remains unclear. By using live cell fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) microscopy and yeast two-hybrid assays, we found that another HCMV tegument(More)
BACKGROUND An assessment was made of the toxicity of imperatorin and osthole identified in Cnidium monnieri fruit, 11 related compounds and five insecticides to larvae from insecticide-susceptible Culex pipiens pallens (KS-CP strain) and Aedes aegypti and wild C.p. pallens (YS-CP colony) using a direct-contact mortality bioassay. Results were compared with(More)
Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), an important legume crop, is grown in more than 30 countries of the world. The seed of adzuki bean, as an important source of starch, digestible protein, mineral elements, and vitamins, is widely used foods for at least a billion people. Here, we generated a high-quality draft genome sequence of adzuki bean by whole-genome(More)
In order to optimize the structure of bispecific antibody (BsAb) and minimize its toxicity, we developed a trivalent anti-ErbB2/anti-CD16 BsAb. This BsAb possesses three antigen binding sites, two antigen binding sites in the form of scFvs targeting the tumor cells overexpressing ErbB2 and a monovalent Fab fragment redirecting NK cells. Critical for this(More)
BACKGROUND Anopheles sinensis, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus and Culex pipiens pallens mosquitoes transmit malaria, dengue fever and West Nile virus diseases respectively. This study was conducted to determine the toxicity of 17 constituents from Magnolia denudata seed hydrodistillate (MD-SHD) and four experimental MD-SHD liquid formulations (10-50 mg(More)
