E-cadherin (E-cad) is an epithelial cell-cell adhesion molecule whose loss or reduced expression is associated with a more invasive tumour phenotype. Ninety-six cases of screen detected pure ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) were analysed immunocytochemically for expression of E-cad using the HECD-1 mouse monoclonal antibody. The in situ component in each(More)
The National Breast Screening Programme affords the opportunity to study breast carcinomas at an early stage in their development. E-cadherin is a calcium-dependent, intercellular adhesion molecule whose loss of expression may facilitate the processes of invasion and metastasis of some human tumours. From a group of screen-detected ductal carcinomas less(More)
INTRODUCTION p14ARF stabilises nuclear p53, with a variable expression of p14ARF mRNA in breast cancers. In vitro, nuclear p14ARF binds Hdm2 to block Hdm2-dependent nucleocytoplasmic shuttling of p53, which is required before cytoplasmic degradation of p53. p14ARF is negatively regulated by p53 and through p53-independent pathways. No studies have yet(More)
Activation of protein kinase-B/Akt (pAkt) is mediated by oestrogen and involves HER-2 in vitro, to phosphorylate Hdm2 and influence p53 cytoplasmic localisation and degradation. Expression of all active Akt isoforms (pAkt) were examined, together with p53/Hdm2 subcellular expression in invasive ductal breast cancers (IDCs), to evaluate whether in vitro(More)
Text transcoders are web--server systems that produce, on the fly, a text-only version of a web page requested by a user of a browser. Although the potential benefits of text transcoders axe multifaceted and discussions on appropriateness of text transcoders to produce accessible versions of web sites are still ongoing, at the moment the impact of(More)
BACKGROUND/AIMS Mutations in the amyloid precursor protein gene were the first to be recognized as a cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS We describe 2 Italian families showing the missense mutation in exon 17 of the amyloid precursor protein gene on chromosome 21 (Val717Ile), known as London mutation. RESULTS In 1 family, this mutation was(More)
Text transcoders are proxy–like systems that respond to requests sent by user's browsers, strip images, multimedia objects, JavaScript code and change the page layout, and return the modified page. Although the potential benefits of text transcoders as mechanisms to provide alternative and robust user interfaces are multifaceted, at the moment their(More)
Although the potential benefits of text transcoders are mul-tifaceted, at the moment their impact on disabled web users is not clear. This paper describes an experiment aimed at evaluating usability of web pages processed by a text transcoder and used by disabled persons. Results based on subjective and objective data show how usability changes.
