The ultrastructure of adult male rat pinealocytes was studied after orchidectomy and orchidectomy followed by LH-RH administration. Castration causes an increased development of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus as well as an increase in the number of lipid droplets and lysosomes. The changes after orchidectomy followed by LH-RH… (More)
The effect of several benzodiazepines (clonazepam, diazepam, Ro 5-4864, Ro 15-1788) and two pineal gland indoleamines (N-acetylserotonin, melatonin) on the spontaneous proliferation of mouse spleen lymphocytes was estimated in vitro by the 3 H-thymidine uptake assay. It was found that diazepam and Ro 5-4864 (a selective peripheral-type benzodiazepine… (More)
The effects of pimozide (a dopamine receptor blocker) and bromocriptine (a dopamine receptor agonist) on the mitotic incidence in the anterior pituitary in male rats was investigated. It was shown that pimozide enhanced anterior pituitary mitotic activity in male rats. Bromocriptine, in turn, suppressed anterior pituitary cell proliferation in… (More)
Experimental evidence has shown that melatonin (MLT) may act through both membrane and nuclear receptors. Moreover, it was proposed that the nuclear MLT receptor is identical with nuclear orphan receptors called RZR/ROR. Our earlier results suggest that the antitumor action of MLT depends mainly on nuclear signaling. In the present study, we investigated… (More)
Effects of dopamine and thyroliberin on the cyclic AMP concentration in the rat anterior pituitary gland were investigatedin vitro. Dopamine by itself had no effect on the anterior pituitary cAMP concentration but inhibited the cAMP-accumulating effect of thyroliberin.
Oestrogens are known to enhance angiotensin biosynthesis by increasing the elaboration of its precursor, angiotensinogen. On the other hand, we found that inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) suppressed the proliferative response of the rat anterior pituitary gland to oestrogens. To answer the question whether the angiotensin system is involved… (More)
The effect of somatostatin and of thyroliberin on the mitotic incidence in the organ-cultured anterior pituitary lobe of the rat was investigated, using the colchicine metaphase-arrest technique. It was found that somatostatin added to the culture medium, together with thyroliberin, blocked the mitogenic effect of the latter.
The effects of peripheral (Ro 5-4864) and central-type (Ro 15-1788) benzodiazepine receptor ligands on estrogen-induced DNA synthesis in the rat anterior pituitary gland was investigated. As expected, a single injection of estradiol (250μg per rat) significantly increased the uptake of3H-thymidine by anterior pituitary cells. Additional treatment with Ro… (More)
The effect of bromocriptine on tritiated thymidine incorporation into nuclei of human fibroblasts has been investigated. A dose-dependent decrease of the labelling index has been found. This observation suggests that the antimitotic action of bromocriptine is a more general phenomenon not restricted to the adenohypophysial cells.
