The production of Υ (1S), Υ (2S) and Υ (3S) mesons in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample of 25 pb−1 collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The Υ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode Υ → μ+μ− and the signal yields are extracted from a fit to the(More)
AIMS This report describes the baseline characteristics of patients in the Reduction of Events with Darbepoetin alfa in Heart Failure trial (RED-HF) which is testing the hypothesis that anaemia correction with darbepoetin alfa will reduce the composite endpoint of death from any cause or hospital admission for worsening heart failure, and improve other(More)
The differential cross-section for the inclusive production of ψ(2S) mesons in pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV has been measured with the LHCb detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb−1. The ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed in the decay channels ψ(2S) → μ+μ− and ψ(2S) → J/ψπ+π−, with the J/ψ meson decaying into two muons.(More)
Kerala's uniquely successful experiment in participatory planning has seen the mobilisation of several thousands of people in the implementation of the Ninth Five-Year Plan. The process had its problems that arose essentially from the absence of a clear perspective about decentralisation. The impact of changing policies following a change of government also(More)
A fiber optic biosensor (FOBS) to monitor mutans streptococci activity in human saliva is developed. The biosensor utilizes e fiber optic evanescent wave spectroscopy to monitor a bacterial mediated biochemical reaction. To achieve this, a short length of the cladding is removed; the fiber core surface is treated and coated with a thin film of porous glass(More)
Few complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) institutions require their students to undergo substantive training in research literacy and conduct, and well-developed programs to train CAM institution faculty in research are virtually non-existent. As part of a National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) initiative to increase(More)
An angular analysis of the decay J/ψ → μ+μ− is performed to measure the polarization of prompt J/ψ mesons produced in pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.37 fb−1 collected with the LHCb detector. The measurement is presented as a function of transverse momentum, pT, and rapidity, y, of the J/ψ meson, in the(More)
A novel method and instrumental system to determine the total protein concentration in a liquid sample is described. It uses a fiber optic total protein sensor (FOPS) based on the principles of fiber optic evanescent wave spectroscopy. The FOPS applies a dye-immobilized porous glass coating on a multi-mode optical fiber. The evanescent waves at the fiber(More)
The spring bloom is a key annual event in the phenology of pelagic ecosystems, making a major contribution to the oceanic biological carbon pump through the production and export of organic carbon. However, there is little consensus as to the main drivers of spring bloom formation, exacerbated by a lack of in situ observations of the phytoplankton community(More)
