Spinodal dewetting in liquid crystal and liquid metal films
Observations in liquid crystal and liquid metal films showed that the emerging structures were similar to those found for spinodal decomposition in mixtures, however, certain differences could be attributed to peculiarities of the wetting forces in these two dissimilar systems, thereby demonstrating the role of nonlinearities inherent in the wetts forces. It is shown that a symmetry breaking of the polynomials when the type of the pattern changes from hexagons to turbulence or stripes means it is possible to describe the pattern transitions quantitatively and it may be possible to classify them in a similar way like thermodynamic phase transitions. The analysis reveals that the scaling regime of asymptotic divergence has not yet been reached for film thicknesses remaining below 5 nm, and the thermal fluctuations are found to be more important for thin adsorbed layers than undulations of the film induced by the roughness of the substrate.
