An ELISA assay was developed to allow the rapid and accurate identification of human influenza A N1 and N2 neuraminidases. This paper describes the operation of a text scanner in terms of a novel sort of finite state machine. Eventually this scanner will be incorporated into a string processing language designed for applications in which pattern recognition can be accomplished by a simple left to right scan.
