An infant with extensive CNS malformations and aplasia of the optic system in association with grossly normal-appearing eyes was studied. The neural malformations included partial agenesis of the medulla, pons, and cerebellum and striking maldevelopment of the telencephalon and diencephalon, with lissencephaly, complete arrhinencephaly, and agenesis of the(More)
Acute Human Parvovirus B19 (HPV B19) infection is the major cause of transient red cell aplasia (TRCA) and acute anaemia in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). We report three cases of patients who developed nephrotic syndrome (NS) with chronic sequelae after initially presenting with HPV B19-associated TRCA. There was no correlation between evidence(More)
OBJECTIVE To examine and compare the food preferences of patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD) and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) with those of age- and sex-matched controls. DESIGN We administered two questionnaires, one assessing preferences for 88 food items (according to a nine-point hedonic scale) and the other assessing(More)
Transfusion of red blood cells is a major therapeutic option in sickle cell disease (SCD). There is strong evidence for its efficacy, particularly in primary and secondary stroke prevention in children, however, its use in other areas remains controversial. This study assessed the patterns of transfusion in the adult cohort attending King's College Hospital(More)

The internal surface of the filtration site, as well as the anterior chamber angle, proved to be lined by corneal endothelium that had laid down a new, thick basement membrane (Descemet). The new(More)
The diagnosis of orbital tumors is a challenging one. Neurilemomas are among the rarer causes of lesions in this location and usually are curable by local excision. The results of tests used in diagnosing orbital tumors are inconsistent in patients with this disease entity. Four patients with orbital neurilemoma are reported. Radiographic (including(More)
Primary outgrowth cultures of normal rabbit corneal epithelium can be initiated and propagated in vitro up to 6 days in serum-free medium. By the eighth day the majority of cells have ceased to divide. Epithelial cells grown without serum show DNA synthetic activity at a level comparable to control cultures grown with added serum.
