A new procedure for the aerobic oxidation of α-amino acids acylated by pyrrole-carboxylic acid with triplet dioxygen is introduced, and the non-catalyzed direct oxidation of amino acid derivatives at the α-position with molecular dioXYgen represents a fundamental question.

Two new modified amino acids and four known metabolites, including C2-alpha-D-mannosylpyranosyl-L-tryptophan, are isolated from the marine sponge Axinella polypoides collected in the Mediterranean Sea.

The diastereoselective synthesis of cyclic β-aminoketone derivatives which are very powerful synthons for alkaloid synthesis are described, demonstrated through the synthesis of indolizidine 209D and also in the preparation of allosedridine which has been isolated from Sedum acre.
