An overview of the emerging role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the development of IPF is provided.
Long Non-Coding RNAs and the Innate Immune Response

The evidence that supports the emerging role of lncRNA in the innate immune response is described and it is shown that this role is mediated via the pro-inflammatory transcription factor, nuclear factor-κB.
Long Non-coding RNAs Are Central Regulators of the IL-1β-Induced Inflammatory Response in Normal and Idiopathic Pulmonary Lung Fibroblasts

Next generation sequencing is employed to identify 14 lncRNAs that are differentially expressed in human lung fibroblasts following the induction of inflammation using interleukin-1β and it is demonstrated that the reduced inflammatory response in IPF fibroblast is correlated with attenuated expression of MIR3142HG/miR-146a.

- Medicine, BiologyArthritis & Rheumatology
- 2019
MALAT1 lncRNA may mediate joint inflammation in obese OA patients and exhibit an inflammatory phenotype, with increased expression of pro-inflammatory mRNAs, compared to normal-weight OA or non-OA fibroblasts.
Long intergenic non-coding RNAs regulate human lung fibroblast function: Implications for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
- Marina R. Hadjicharalambous, Benoît T. Roux, M. Lindsay
- Medicine, BiologyScientific Reports
- 15 April 2019
These studies demonstrate for the first time that lincRNAs are important regulators of proliferation and inflammation in human lung fibroblasts and that these might mediate the reduced inflammatory response observed in IPF-derived fibro Blasts.
