Fossil Record and Age of the Asteridae

The results suggest that the Asteridae dates back to at least the Turonian, Late Cretaceous and that by the Late Santonian-Early Campanian its four main clades were already represented in the fossil record.

A new fossil taxon from the Late Cretaceous of New Jersey is described, Pentapetalum trifasciculandricus Martínez-Millán, which includes actinomorphic pentamerous flowers with quincuncial calyx, imbricate corolla, numerous stamens of markedly different heights, and a superior tricarpellate ovary that supports its inclusion in the order Ericales sensu APG.

The description of the leaf architecture of 61 genera of Anacardiaceae is presented, and the leaves of 102 species were cleared, mounted and observed under both dissection and compound microscopes.
