Liver biopsies were analyzed in 21 patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) who tested positive for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), using Elisa II and/ or PCR. Filariform larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis were found by cytologic examination in Papanicolaou-stained smears of ascitic fluid in a renal transplant recipient treated with immunosuppressive drugs. The patient developed a fatal hyperinfection of S. stercoralis produced by an autoinfective cycle of the parasite.
