Endemic earthworms (Oligochaeta: Lumbricidae) of the Balkan Peninsula: a review.

The study shows that the degree of endemism on the Balkan Peninsula is extremely high suggesting an important process of autochthonous speciation on the Balkans, within the context of paleoenvironmental changes.

The authors present the results of recent investigations of earthworms from Sumadija, finding 27 taxa including six species new for the earthworm fauna of Sumadij: Dendrobaena alpina, Helodrilus cernosvitovianus, Octolasion cyaneum, Octodrillus complanatus, Serbiona serbica, and Serb Fiona paratuleskovi.

The authors discuss the zoogeographic distribution in the Balkans of two species of the earthworm fauna of Sumadija, namely Aporrectodea sineporis and Helodrilus cernosvitovianus, and the available evidence indicates that H. cernOSvitvianus is mainly a Balkan element, while A. sinporis has a distribution of the South European type.
