It is shown that chronic environmental exposure of Atlantic croaker to hypoxia in a Florida estuary caused marked suppression of ovarian and testicular growth which was accompanied by endocrine disruption, indicating that the stimulatory serotonergic neuroendocrine pathway is a major site of Hypoxia-induced inhibition.

It is speculated that the cues from the moon can be recognized by the higher parts of the hypothalamus–pituitary–gonadal axis, and that pituitary secretion of GtH according to the lunar cycle accounts for the lunar rhythm in gonadal development.

Severe reproductive impairment can occur over large coastal regions in marine fish populations exposed to seasonal hypoxia, with potential long-term impacts on population abundance.
Effects of Hypoxia Exposure on Hepatic Cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) Expression in Atlantic Croaker: Molecular Mechanisms of CYP1A Down-Regulation
The present study provides the first evidence of a role for antioxidants in hepatic eNOS and IL-1β regulation in aquatic vertebrates during hypoxic stress and suggests that hypoxia-induced down-regulation of CYP1A is due to alterations of NO and oxidant status, and cellular IL- 1β and HIF-α levels.

Identification and characterization of membrane androgen receptors in the ZIP9 zinc transporter subfamily: I. Discovery in female atlantic croaker and evidence ZIP9 mediates testosterone-induced…
The cloning and expression of a cDNA from Atlantic croaker ovaries encoding a 33-kDa, seven-transmembrane protein with binding and signaling characteristics of a membrane androgen receptor that is unrelated to any previously described steroid receptor is reported, providing the first evidence that zinc transporter proteins can function as specific steroid membrane receptors.
