A novel screening method for melanin biosynthesis inhibitors using Streptomyces bikiniensis NRRL B-1049 as the indicator organism has been developed and several known compounds were found to inhibit melanin production of S. bikiniensis on agar plates.

Tallysomycins A and B were highly active against B16 melanoma, sarcoma 180 ascites tumor and Lewis lung carcinoma, and moderately active against P388 leukemia but were without effect on lymphoid leukemia L1210.
