Fractionation of the n-hexane extract of Salvia hydrangea afforded seven isoprenoids including six new compounds (1-6) and salvadione A (7) and a biosynthetic pathway for the formation of the scaffold of 1 is proposed.

It is demonstrated that xanthomicrol can induce apoptosis and suppress angiogenesis in breast cancer cells due to its inhibitory effect on oncomirs and its stimulatory effect on tumor suppressor miRNAs.

The acetone extract and some isolated compounds exhibited considerable cytotoxicity against cervical cancer cell line (HeLa) in MTT assay, among them calycopterin with IC50 equals to 5.1 μM was the strongest.

Two new triterpenoids with rare carbon skeletons were isolated from an antiplasmodial n-hexane extract of Salvia hydrangea, and in vitro activity against Plasmodium falciparum K1 strain, Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense STIB 900 strain, and cytotoxicity in rat myoblast (L6) cells were determined.
