Evaluation of the BACTEC radiometric method for recovery of mycobacteria and drug susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from acid-fast smear-positive specimens
- G. Roberts, N. L. Goodman, P. Wright
- Medicine, BiologyJournal of Clinical Microbiology
- 1 September 1983
There was an excellent correlation in the recovery rates of mycobacteria by the two methods, and an average of 18 days was required by the BACTEC method for complete recovery and drug susceptibility testing of M. tuberculosis.
Early clinical and laboratory diagnosis of invasive pulmonary, extrapulmonary, and disseminated mucormycosis (zygomycosis).

Because conventional diagnostic tools are limited in their sensitivity, advanced molecular amplification systems, antigen detection assays, proteomic profiles, and metabolite detection may complement existing approaches to improve the rate of early diagnosis of invasive mucormycosis.

PHIALEMONIUM, A NEW ANAMORPH GENUS INTERMEDIATE BETWEEN PHIALOPHORA AND ACREMONIUM
- W. Gams, M. Mcginnis
- Biology

To establish a practical system of classification for these anamorph genera, they should not be split further, though more natural groups that correlate with their appropriate teleomorph genera can sometimes be distinguished at the subgeneric level (Morgan-Jones and Gams, 1982).

The overall optimal testing conditions identified were determination of colorimetric MICs after 48 to 72 h of incubation with an inoculum density of approximately 10(4) CFU/ml, proposed as guidelines for a reference broth microdilution method.

Good performance with all three drugs was observed for Candida parapsilosis ATCC 22019 and C. krusei ATCC 6258, and these two strains are recommended for QC testing of amphotericin B, fluconazole, and 5FC.
