Several lines of in vivo and in vitro evidence are provided that a novel and unique His‐containing phosphotransmitter (named YojN) is essential for this signalling system that is involved in the regulation of capsular polysaccharide synthesis in Escherichia coli.

The view that SixA is capable of functioning as a phosphohistidine phosphatase that may be implicated in the His‐Asp phosphorelay through regulating the phosphorylation state of the HPt domain is supported.

This work has addressed the issue of whether osmo‐responsive EnvZ and anaero‐responsive ArcB phosphorelay signalling pathways in E. coli constitute a network of signalling pathways through a physiologically relevant mechanism (often referred to as ‘cross‐regulation’).
EnvZ-independent phosphotransfer signaling pathway of the OmpR-mediated osmoregulatory expression of OmpC and OmpF in Escherichia coli.

Genetic evidence is provided that, in addition to EnvZ, acetyl phosphate and an as yet unidentified sensor His-kinase can serve as alternative in vivo phospho-donors for OmpR, even in the envZ+ background.

Oligonucleotide analyses of recombinants between strain K12 and strain B(H) showed that the loci for 16S rRNA containing the K-sequence were near the metB locus which was at 77 min. on the chromosome map.

The results support Gaul den's hypothesis that oxygen deficits and CO2 increases in the microenvironment of mature oocytes can be potent inducers of nondisjunction and support the cluster of Down syndrome seen in Berlin shortly after the Chernobyl accident.
