THE 2014 ALMA LONG BASELINE CAMPAIGN: AN OVERVIEW
- A. Partnership, E. Fomalont, S. Wood
- Physics, Environmental Science
- 14 July 2015
A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires…
Circumstellar water vapour in M-type AGB stars: radiative transfer models, abundances, and predictions for HIFI
- M. Maercker, F. Schoeier, H. Olofsson, P. Bergman, S. Ramstedt
- Physics, Geology
- 7 January 2008
Context. Surprisingly high amounts of H 2 O have recently been reported in the circumstellar envelope around the M-type asymptotic giant branch star W Hya. This has lead to the speculation that…
Unexpectedly large mass loss during the thermal pulse cycle of the red giant star R Sculptoris
- M. Maercker, S. Mohamed, L. Nyman
- PhysicsNature
- 10 October 2012
It is concluded that R Sculptoris is a binary system that underwent a thermal pulse about 1,800 years ago, lasting approximately 200 years, and about three times more mass was returned to the interstellar medium during and immediately after the pulse than previously thought.
The wonderful complexity of the Mira AB system
- S. Ramstedt, S. Mohamed, S. Sacuto
- Physics, Geology
- 1 October 2014
We have mapped the (CO)-C-12(3-2) line emission around the Mira AB system at 0 ''.5 resolution using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The CO map shows amazing complexity. The…
L-band (3.5 μm) IR-excess in massive star formation. I. 30 Doradus
- M. Maercker, M. Burton
- Physics
- 27 April 2005
L-band data of 30 Doradus at 3.5"m taken with SPIREX (South Pole Infrared Explorer) is presented. The photometry was combined with 2MASS JHK data at 1.25 -2.2"m. Colour-colour and colour-magnitude…
Study of the inner dust envelope and stellar photosphere of the AGB star R Doradus using SPHERE/ZIMPOL
- T. Khouri, M. Maercker, E. Lagadec
- Physics
- 18 May 2016
We use high-angular-resolution images obtained with SPHERE/ZIMPOL to study the photosphere, the warm molecular layer, and the inner wind of the close-by oxygen-rich AGB star R Doradus. We present…
Embedded stellar populations towards young massive star formation regions - I. G305.2+0.2
- S. Longmore, M. Maercker, S. Ramstedt, M. Burton
- Physics
- 26 June 2007
We present deep, wide field J, H and Ks images taken with Infrared Imager and Spectrometer 2 (IRIS2) on the Anglo-Australian Telescope, towards the massive star formation region G305.2+0.2. Combined…
The wind of W Hydrae as seen by Herschel I. The CO envelope
- T. Khouri, A. D. Koter, J. Yates
- Physics
- 12 March 2014
Context. Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars lose their envelopes by means of a stellar wind whose driving mechanism is not understood well. Characterizing the composition and thermal and dynamical…
High-resolution observations of gas and dust around Mira using ALMA and SPHERE/ZIMPOL
- T. Khouri, W. Vlemmings, S. Ramstedt
- Physics, GeologyAstronomy & Astrophysics
- 9 October 2018
Context. The outflows of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are thought to be driven by radiation pressure due to the scattering of photons on relatively large grains, with sizes of…
The wind of the M-type AGB star RT Virginis probed by VLTI/MIDI ⋆
- S. Sacuto, S. Ramstedt, M. Maercker
- Physics, Chemistry
- 24 January 2013
Aims. We study the circumstellar environment of the M-type AGB star RT Vir using mid-infrared high spatial resolution observations from the ESO-VLTI focal instrument MIDI. The aim of this study is ...
