A vegetable to meat consumption ratio as a relevant factor determining cancer preventive diet. The Mediterranean versus other European countries.
TLDR
It is argued that it is not the consumption of a single food product or an individual component of diet, but rather a proper ratio of vegetable to meat consumption that is responsible for cancer prevention, and the ratio between vegetables and meat consumption can be used successfully to evaluate the dietary pattern related to cancer risk.
The protective ability of the Mediterranean plant extracts against the oxidative DNA damage. The role of the radical oxygen species and the polyphenol content.
TLDR
The DNA protective ability of plant extracts seems to be related to the lowpolyphenol concentration and only to certain extent depends on the polyphenol ROS scavenging activity.
Content of iron and copper in the nuclei and induction of pH 9-labile lesions in L5178Y sublines inversely cross-sensitive to H2O2 and x-rays
TLDR
The initial pH-9-labile damage corresponds to the pattern of sensitivity to H2O2 and x-rays, and it is suggested that this is caused by different proportions of cuprous and ferric ions found in the nuclei of LY sublines and by the different ability of these ions to react with H2 O2 and water radiolysis products.
Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) polymorphism is related to differences in potential fertility in women: a case of antagonistic pleiotropy?
TLDR
It is suggested that the finding of higher progesterone in women with ApoE4 allele could provide first strong evidence for an evolutionary mechanism of maintaining the ancestral and health-worsening apolipoprotein E (ApoE) allele in human populations.
Modulatory effect of quercetin on DNA damage, induced by etoposide in bone marrow cells and on changes in the activity of antioxidant enzymes in rats.
TLDR
Evidence is provided that quercetin, administered to rats, provides major protection against etoposide-induced DNA damage in bone marrow cells and does not influence either the SOD activity, lowered by etopOSide, or AOP, enhanced by etOPoside.
Differential induction of apoptosis in x-irradiated L5178Y sublines bearing p53 mutation
TLDR
The reported observations support the assumption that differential radiosensitivity of LY sublines is associated with the induction of apoptosis that is not related to transactivation by p53 and is primarily related to differential DNA repair ability.
Short interpregnancy interval and low birth weight: A role of parity
TLDR
This study tests if the effect of short IPI on the odds ratio for low birth weight (LBW, <2,500 g) differs across parity status.
DNA supercoiling changes in nucleoids from irradiated L5178Y-S and -R cells.
TLDR
One-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis demonstrated that nucleoids from LY-S cells were missing a 55-kDa protein present in LY -R, which implies that a similar extent of damage results in a greater loss of topological constraints on the DNA loops in Ly-S.
