New findings of Neurospora in Europe and comparisons of diversity in temperate climates on continental scales
- D. Jacobson, J. Dettman, John W. Taylor
- Environmental ScienceMycologia
- 1 July 2006
The species distribution and spatial dynamics of Neurospora populations showed both similarities and differences when compared between temperate Europe and western North America, both regions of similar latitude, climate and vegetation.
Phylogenetic origin of the endemic pigeons from Madeira (Columba trocaz) and Azores Islands (Columba palumbus azorica)
- C. G. Dourado, M. Duarte, D. Dias
- BiologyJournal of Ornithology
- 2013
The phylogeny of pigeon (genus Columba) phylogeny within the archipelagos of Madeira and Azores is addressed, which suggests a relatively recent colonisation event of the Azores Islands.
Pair-bonding behaviour of the sister species Microtus lusitanicus and M. duodecimcostatus
- M. Duarte, Maria Luz Mathias, C. Bastos-Silveira
- Biology, PsychologyJournal of ethology
- 3 July 2015
Results support a social monogamous mating system for both species and reveal a significant female preference for the male partner, rather than a stranger, in Microtus lusitanicus and M. duodecimcostatus.
Permanent Genetic Resources added to Molecular Ecology Resources Database 1 February 2012 – 31 March 2012

The addition of 171 microsatellite marker loci and 27 pairs of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sequencing primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database are documents.
Anonymous nuclear loci in the white-faced storm-petrel Pelagodroma marina and their applicability to other Procellariiform seabirds.
- Mónica C. Silva, M. Duarte, M. M. Coelho
- Biology, Environmental ScienceJournal of Heredity
- 1 May 2011
High levels of cross-species amplification success are found, varying between 79% and 86% in representatives of Diomedeidae, Procellariidae, Pelecanoididae, and other Hydrobatidae and will be a valuable tool in future population genetics and phylogenetic studies, particularly of nonmodel seabird species.
Variation and Selection in the Putative Sperm-Binding Region of ZP3 in Muroid Rodents: A Comparison between Cricetids and Murines
- M. Duarte, Carlos Rodríguez Fernandes, G. Heckel, M. da Luz Mathias, C. Bastos-Silveira
- BiologyGenes
- 1 September 2021
A general lack of species specificity of the putative sperm-binding region (pSBR) of mouse ZP3 is suggested across Cricetidae and Murinae, two hyperdiverse taxonomic groups within muroid rodents.
Olfactory receptors and behavioural isolation: a study on Microtus voles
- M. Duarte, Gerald Heckel, Maria da Luz Mathias, Cristiane Bastos-Silveira
- BiologyMammal Research
- 18 March 2016
For several Microtus species, including M. lusitanicus and M. duodecimcostatus, these proteins probably recognise conserved odour cues not related to behavioural isolation, suggesting that olfaction has undergone diversifying selection in diverging populations and may contribute to premating reproductive isolation.

Pair-bonding behaviour of the sister species Microtus lusitanicus and M. duodecimcostatus
- M. Duarte, M. da Luz Mathias, C. Bastos-Silveira
- Biology, PsychologyJournal of ethology
- 3 July 2015
Results suggest rare male extra-pair mating in M. lusitanicus and M. duodecimcostatus and support a social monogamous mating system for both species and reveal a significant female preference for the male partner, rather than a stranger.
