Long non-coding RNAs: insights into functions
The rapidly advancing field of long ncRNAs is reviewed, describing their conservation, their organization in the genome and their roles in gene regulation, and the medical implications.

The results show that the majority of ncRNAs are expressed in the brain and provide strong evidence that themajority of processed transcripts with no protein-coding capacity function intrinsically as RNAs.
MEN epsilon/beta nuclear-retained non-coding RNAs are up-regulated upon muscle differentiation and are essential components of paraspeckles.
The findings indicate that the MEN epsilon/beta non-coding RNAs are essential structural/organizational components of paraspeckles.
Differentiating Protein-Coding and Noncoding RNA: Challenges and Ambiguities
It is concluded that it is difficult to annotate an RNA unequivocally as protein-coding or noncoding, with overlapping protein- coding and nonc coding transcripts further confounding this distinction.
Genome-wide discovery of human splicing branchpoints.
Analysis of human branchpoints reveals numerous novel features, including distinct features of branchpoints for alternatively spliced exons and a family of conserved sequence motifs overlapping branchpoints the authors term B-boxes, which exhibit maximal nucleotide diversity while maintaining interactions with the keto-rich U2 snRNA.
The Human Mitochondrial Transcriptome
Non‐coding RNAs: regulators of disease
The biology of ncRNAs is reviewed, focusing on the fundamental mechanisms by which nc RNAs facilitate normal development and physiology and, when dysfunctional, underpin disease, and the need to move beyond the confines of protein‐coding genes.
Genome-wide analysis of long noncoding RNA stability.
Analysis of lncRNA features revealed that intergenic and cis-antisense RNAs are more stable than those derived from introns, as are spliced lncRNAs compared to unspliced (single exon) transcripts, as well as lnc RNAs showing extreme stability.
lncRNAdb: a reference database for long noncoding RNAs
- P. Amaral, M. Clark, Dennis K. Gascoigne, M. Dinger, J. Mattick
- BiologyNucleic Acids Res.
- 25 November 2010
lncRNAdb is a database containing a comprehensive list of lncRNAs that have been shown to have, or to be associated with, biological functions in eukaryotes, as well as messenger RNAs that has regulatory roles.
Long noncoding RNAs in mouse embryonic stem cell pluripotency and differentiation.
The data indicate that long ncRNAs are likely to be important in processes directing pluripotency and alternative differentiation programs, in some cases through engagement of the epigenetic machinery.
