Fatal outcome of human influenza A (H5N1) is associated with high viral load and hypercytokinemia
- M. D. de Jong, C. Simmons, J. Farrar
- Biology, MedicineNature Network Boston
- 10 September 2006
The observations indicate that high viral load, and the resulting intense inflammatory responses, are central to influenza H5N1 pathogenesis and the focus of clinical management should be on preventing this intense cytokine response, by early diagnosis and effective antiviral treatment.
Avian Influenza Virus (H5N1): a Threat to Human Health
- J. Peiris, M. D. de Jong, Y. Guan
- Medicine, BiologyClinical Microbiology Reviews
- 1 April 2007
The ecology and evolution of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 viruses are reviewed, the pandemic risk is assessed, and aspects of human H 5N1 disease are addressed in relation to its epidemiology, clinical presentation, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management.

Oseltamivir resistance during treatment of influenza A (H5N1) infection.
- M. D. de Jong, T. T. Tran, J. Farrar
- Medicine, BiologyNew England Journal of Medicine
- 22 December 2005
It is suggested that resistance can emerge during the currently recommended regimen of oseltamivir therapy and may be associated with clinical deterioration and that the strategy for the treatment of influenza A (H5N1) virus infection should include additional antiviral agents.

S. suis serotype 2 is the most frequent cause of bacterial meningitis in adults in southern Vietnam and is associated with substantial morbidity attributable to hearing loss.
Effect of Hydrocortisone on Mortality and Organ Support in Patients With Severe COVID-19: The REMAP-CAP COVID-19 Corticosteroid Domain Randomized Clinical Trial.
To determine whether hydrocortisone improves outcome for patients with severe COVID-19, an ongoing adaptive platform trial testing multiple interventions within multiple therapeutic domains, for example, antiviral agents, corticosteroids, or immunoglobulin was conducted.
Baloxavir Marboxil for Uncomplicated Influenza in Adults and Adolescents
- F. Hayden, N. Sugaya, A. Watanabe
- MedicineNew England Journal of Medicine
- 5 September 2018
Single‐dose baloxavir was without evident safety concerns, was superior to placebo in alleviating influenza symptoms, and was superiorto both oseltamivir and placebo in reducing the viral load 1 day after initiation of the trial regimen in patients with uncomplicated influenza.
The Ecology, Genetic Diversity, and Phylogeny of Huaiyangshan Virus in China
- Yong‐Zhen Zhang, D. Zhou, Jianguo Xu
- BiologyJournal of Virology
- 21 December 2011
Phylogenetic analyses indicate that HYSV is a novel species of the genus Phlebovirus, with greater prevalence in H. longicornis and lesser prevalence in R. microplus.
Fatal avian influenza A (H5N1) in a child presenting with diarrhea followed by coma.
- M. D. de Jong, V. C. Bach, J. Farrar
- MedicineNew England Journal of Medicine
- 17 February 2005
In southern Vietnam, a four-year-old boy presented with severe diarrhea, followed by seizures, coma, and death, and the clinical diagnosis was acute encephalitis, suggesting that the spectrum of influenza H5N1 is wider than previously thought.
