Proposed minimal standards for the use of genome data for the taxonomy of prokaryotes.
- J. Chun, A. Oren, M. Trujillo
- BiologyInternational Journal of Systematic and…
- 2018
The minimal standards for the quality of genome sequences and how they can be applied for taxonomic purposes are described.
Deinococcus geothermalis sp. nov. and Deinococcus murrayi sp. nov., two extremely radiation-resistant and slightly thermophilic species from hot springs.
- A. Ferreira, M. F. Nobre, M. D. da Costa
- BiologyInternational Journal of Systematic Bacteriology
- 1 October 1997
16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that the isolates constitute two species and that these species are distinct from the other species of the genus Deinococcus, and that the fatty acids of these new species are primarily branched-chain fatty acids.
Extensive Diversity of Ionizing-Radiation-Resistant Bacteria Recovered from Sonoran Desert Soil and Description of Nine New Species of the Genus Deinococcus Obtained from a Single Soil Sample
- F. Rainey, K. Ray, M. D. da Costa
- Biology, MedicineApplied and Environmental Microbiology
- 1 September 2005
The recovery of large numbers of extremely ionizing-radiation-resistant bacteria from an arid soil and not from a nonarid soil provides further ecological support for the hypothesis that the ionizing -radiation resistance phenotype is a consequence of the evolution of other DNA repair systems that protect cells against commonly encountered environmental stressors, such as desiccation.
Thermus igniterrae sp. nov. and Thermus antranikianii sp. nov., two new species from Iceland.
- A. Chung, F. Rainey, M. Valente, M. F. Nobre, M. D. da Costa
- BiologyInternational Journal of Systematic and…
- 2000
The new isolates from Iceland could not be distinguished easily from each other or from other strains of the species of the genus Thermus by biochemical characteristics; however, strains RF-4T and HN1-8 assimilated ribitol, a characteristic which was not detected in any of the other strains examined.
Truepera radiovictrix gen. nov., sp. nov., a new radiation resistant species and the proposal of Trueperaceae fam. nov.

An overview of the role and diversity of compatible solutes in Bacteria and Archaea.
- M. D. da Costa, H. Santos, E. Galinski
- Chemistry, BiologyAdvances in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology
- 1998
The mechanisms by which compatible solutes protect enzymes, cell components and cells are still a long way from being thoroughly elucidated, but there is a growing interest in the utilization of these solutes to protect macromolecules and cells from heating, freezing and desiccation.
Phylogenetic diversity of the deinococci as determined by 16S ribosomal DNA sequence comparison.
- F. Rainey, M. F. Nobre, P. Schumann, E. Stackebrandt, M. D. da Costa
- BiologyInternational Journal of Systematic Bacteriology
- 1 April 1997
An analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence of Deinococcus erythromyxa revealed that this organism is an actinomycete and a member of the genus Kocuria, and Deinobacter grandis is transferred to the genus De inococcus as DeInococcus grandis comb.
Dehalogenimonas lykanthroporepellens gen. nov., sp. nov., a reductively dehalogenating bacterium isolated from chlorinated solvent-contaminated groundwater.
- W. Moe, Jun Yan, M. F. Nobre, M. D. da Costa, F. Rainey
- BiologyInternational Journal of Systematic and…
- 1 November 2009
Morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic traits as well as phylogenetic analysis support the conclusion that these two strains represent a novel species of a new genus in the phylum Chloroflexi, for which the name Dehalogenimonas lykanthroporepellens gen. nov., sp.
Alicyclobacillus hesperidum sp. nov. and a related genomic species from solfataric soils of São Miguel in the Azores.
- L. Albuquerque, F. Rainey, M. D. da Costa
- Biology, MedicineInternational Journal of Systematic and…
- 1 March 2000
On the basis of the phylogenetic analysis, physiological and biochemical characteristics, and fatty acid composition the name Alicyclobacillus hesperidum is proposed for the species represented by strains FR-11T and FR-1b; a formal name for the new genomic species represented in these organisms is not proposed at this time.
Description of Idiomarina insulisalsae sp. nov., isolated from the soil of a sea salt evaporation pond, proposal to transfer the species of the genus Pseudidiomarina to the genus Idiomarina and…
