Technology probes: inspiring design for and with families
We describe a new method for use in the process of co-designing technologies with users called technology probes. Technology probes are simple, flexible, adaptable technologies with three…
Instrumental interaction: an interaction model for designing post-WIMP user interfaces
- M. Beaudouin-Lafon
- Art, Computer ScienceCHI
- 1 April 2000
The article presents the model, applies it to describe and compare a number of interaction techniques, and shows how it was used to create a new interface for searching and replacing text.
Charade: remote control of objects using free-hand gestures
An application that uses hand gesture input to control a computer while giving a presentation and an interaction model, a notation for gestures, and a set of guidelines to design gestural command sets are presented.
Semantic pointing: improving target acquisition with control-display ratio adaptation
A controlled experiment is presented supporting the hypothesis that the performance of semantic pointing is given by Fitts' index of difficulty in motor rather than visual space.
Designing interaction, not interfaces
- M. Beaudouin-Lafon
- Computer ScienceAVI
- 25 May 2004
It is argued that the only way to significantly improve user interfaces is to shift the research focus from designing interfaces to designing interaction, which requires powerful interaction models, a better understanding of both the sensory-motor details of interaction and a broader view of interaction in the context of use.
Human on-line response to target expansion
The results show that target expansion occurring as late as in M&B's experiment enhances pointing performance in the absence of expectation, and the implications for user interface design are addressed by introducing a revised design for the Mac OS X Dock.
Object Pointing: A Complement to Bitmap Pointing in GUIs
Object pointing is introduced, a novel interaction technique based on a special screen cursor that skips empty spaces, thus drastically reducing the waste of input information and the performance facilitation increases with the task's index of difficulty.
Target acquisition in multiscale electronic worlds
Shared substance: developing flexible multi-surface applications
- Tony Gjerlufsen, C. Klokmose, J. Eagan, Clément Pillias, M. Beaudouin-Lafon
- Computer ScienceCHI
- 7 May 2011
The finding is that the combination of a data-oriented programming model with middleware support for sharing data and functionality provides a flexible, robust solution with low viscosity at both design-time and run-time.
Webstrates: Shareable Dynamic Media
This work revisits Alan Kay's early vision of dynamic media that blurs the distinction between documents and applications and presents Webstrates, an environment for exploring shareable dynamicMedia, which turns web pages into substrates, i.e. software entities that act as applications or documents depending upon use.
