A clone of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus among professional football players.
A highly conserved, community-associated MRSA clone that caused abscesses among professional football players and that was indistinguishable from isolates from various other regions of the United States is described.
Swab Materials and Bacillus anthracis Spore Recovery from Nonporous Surfaces
Premoistened macrofoam and cotton swabs that were vortexed during processing recovered the greatest proportions of spores with a mean recovery of 43.6% (standard deviation [SD] 11.1%) and 41.7% (SD 14.6%), respectively.
National validation study of a swab protocol for the recovery of Bacillus anthracis spores from surfaces.
This swab processing protocol, was sensitive, specific, precise, and reproducible at 2-4 log(10)/26cm(2) spore concentrations, and demonstrated linearity in %R over the three inoculum levels and is able to detect between 26 and 5x10(6)spores/26 cm(2).
National Surveillance of Dialysis‐Associated Diseases in the United States, 2000
In December 2000, all U.S. dialysis centers were surveyed regarding selected patient care practices and dialysis‐associated diseases. The results were compared with similar surveys conducted in
Inactivation of Bacillus anthracis Spores
A survey of the literature that had potential application to the inactivation of B. anthracis spores was conducted and a tabular summary of the results is provided.
Epidemiology and mortality risk of vancomycin-resistant enterococcal bloodstream infections.
Data suggest that increasing severity of illness, underlying disease, and receipt of vancomycin are major risk factors for VRE-BSI.
An epidemic of Malassezia pachydermatis in an intensive care nursery associated with colonization of health care workers' pet dogs.
In this outbreak, it is likely that M. pachydermatis was introduced into the intensive care nursery on health care workers' hands after being colonized from pet dogs at home.
Control of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus in health care facilities in a region.
An active infection-control intervention, which includes the obtaining of surveillance cultures and the isolation of infected patients, can reduce or eliminate the transmission of vancomycin-resistant enterococci in the health care facilities of a region.
Evaluation of a Macrofoam Swab Protocol for the Recovery of Bacillus anthracis Spores from a Steel Surface
ABSTRACT A protocol to recover Bacillus anthracis spores from a steel surface using macrofoam swabs was evaluated for its accuracy, precision, reproducibility, and limit of detection. Macrofoam swabs
Outbreak of adverse reactions associated with contaminated heparin.
Heparin contaminated with OSCS was epidemiologically linked to adverse reactions in this nationwide outbreak and the reported clinical features of many of the cases further support the conclusion that contamination of heparin with O SCS was the cause of the outbreak.
