The surprisingly high prevalence of beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) in wild eastern rosellas and sulphur-crested cockatoos in New Zealand has serious implications for the conservation of native parrots and the export of wild-trapped parrot andcockatoos from New Zealand.
An epidemic of salmonellosis caused by Salmonella Typhimurium DT160 in wild birds and humans in New Zealand
- M. Alley, J. Connolly, C. Reed
- BiologyNew Zealand Veterinary Journal
- 1 October 2002
This strain of Salmonella has emerged as a major cause of septicaemia in wild birds in New Zealand and poses a serious zoonotic risk to house sparrows (Passer domesticus) and humans.

Chronic and subacute pneumonia has been recognized as a common finding in the lungs of lambs at slaughter throughout New Zealand and residual pleuritis is an important cause of economic loss through high condemnation rates of carcasses.
Tensile stiffness of ovine tracheal wall.

If the equivalent tissue in the bronchioles has the same tensile stiffness as that in the trachea, the forces required to fold the membrane are significant at small transbronchial pressure differences and increase in the presence of membrane thickening such as that seen in asthma.
Aspergillosis in hihi (Notiomystis cincta) on Mokoia Island.
It seems likely that affected birds were immunosuppressed during the breeding season which in this species is highly stressful, and the presence of fungal material in bronchial exudate raises the possibility that aspergillosis in hihi may be contagious.
Physical determinants of bronchial mucosal folding.
- R. Lambert, S. Codd, M. Alley, R. Pack
- Biology, EngineeringJournal of applied physiology
- 1 September 1994
The outcome of this analysis is that the increase in intrinsic stiffness of the folding membrane resulting from the increased thickness outweighs the decrease in stiffness conferred by the fewer folds required by the thicker submucosa.
Chronic non-progressive pneumonia of sheep in New Zealand - a review of the role of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae.
As natural immunity to CNP occurs within the first year and it may be possible to develop an effective and useful vaccine, research work to date suggests that CNP may be initiated by colonisation of the lung by M. ovipneumoniae.
