Metacercariae of heterophyid trematodes are among the most frequent and abundant parasites offish in Mexico, in particular in its southeastern part.

Phylogeny is important because it clearly separates all four host species by their specialist parasites, although specific habitat and feeding habits also significantly influence the differentiation between the four fish species.
Trematode diversity in freshwater fishes of the Globe II: ‘New World’
A better understanding of trematode diversity and biology will also depend on strategic sampling throughout the Americas, as well as the paucity of known life-cycles.

It can be concluded that C. dodsworthi is the only species of marine Cucullanus from the Americas that possesses lateral body alae, and as a putative sister taxon to T. truttae.
NEW AND PREVIOUSLY DESCRIBED SPECIES OF DACTYLOGYRIDAE (MONOGENOIDEA) FROM THE GILLS OF PANAMANIANFRESHWATER FISHES (TELEOSTEI)

Consideration of the comparative morphology and distribution of these parasites along with the evolutionary history of the host fishes suggests that diversification may be associated with geotectonic events that provided isolation of the Central American fauna with the uplift of the Panamanian Isthmus during early Pliocene (3 mya).
