The well-known discussion on an engine consisting of a ratchet and a pawl in R.9] is shown to contain some misguided aspects: since the engine is simultaneously in contact with reservoirs at diierent temperatures , it can never work in a reversible way. As a consequence, the engine can never achieve the eeciency of a Carnot cycle, not even in the limit of(More)
Adolescent life experiences, measured with Owen's Biographical Questionnaire (BQ), were used to predict occupational attainment 16 years to 21 years later in a sample of 1,523 college graduates. Study participants completed the BQ in either 1968 or 1970-1973 as college freshmen and subsequently reported their occupational status in 1989. Jobs were(More)
New utperience with the operation of the SLC Arcs is described. Each of these Arcs consists of sequential second-order achromats. Initial measurements showed that the betatron phase advances were systematically offset from the design values. This effect, combined with the abrupt rolls of the achro-mats needed to follow the local terrain, led to strong(More)
Hemostatic gelatin sponges were placed in hemispheric defects created in four dogs which were then periodically scanned by computed tomography to determine the postoperative appearance of the sponges. The hemostatic sponges appeared as low attenuation regions for 7-10 days. The attenuation value of these Gelfoam cavities was intermediate between fat and(More)
The SLC Arcs were rolled at achromat boundaries to follow the terrain of the SLAC site. This makes the linear optics sensitive to systematic gradient errors, from which severe cross-plane coupling effects may arise. As a partial correction, a smoother roll transition was introduced which relieves much of this sensitivity. We present an evaluation of this(More)
The Arc transport line, which brings high-ener electron and positron bunches from the SLAC E high-intensity ac to the Stan-ford Linear Collider final focus section, has been in operation for the ast few years. In this paper, we will review the techniques cf eveloped for the optical tune-up and diagnostics, recent performance, and ongoing improvemen t(More)
In order to examine the effects that race and personality type have on self-reported drinking practices, samples of 49 White and 49 Black male alcoholics were matched on age and education, and classified into two personality types according to MMPI scores. The results of multivariate and univariate analyses of variance yielded significant main effects.(More)
While anxiety is part of the clinical picture for alcohol abusers, there are no published normative data available for this population on state and trait anxiety as assessed by the STAI (Form Y). Pre- and posttreatment STAI-Y scores were examined from 107 males who volunteered for treatment at a Veterans Administration Medical Center Alcohol Dependence(More)
