The CCR4-NOT complex is the main enzyme catalyzing the deadenylation of mRNA. We have investigated the composition of this complex in Drosophila melanogaster by immunoprecipitation with a monoclonal antibody directed against NOT1. The CCR4, CAF1 (=POP2), NOT1, NOT2, NOT3, and CAF40 subunits were associated in a stable complex, but NOT4 was not. Factors(More)
The first specific functionality of the light-chain (L-chain) subunit of the universal iron storage protein ferritin was identified. The electrons released during iron-oxidation were transported across the ferritin cage specifically through the L-chains and the inverted electron transport through the L-chains also accelerated the demineralization of(More)
We demonstrate a straightforward method to encapsulate siRNA into naturally available and unmodified human apoferritin. The encapsulation into apoferritin is independent of the sequence of the siRNA and provides superior protection for those sensitive molecules. High efficiency in transfection can be achieved in human tumorigenic cells, human primary(More)
The great potential for medical applications of inorganic nanoparticles in living organisms is severely restricted by the concern that nanoparticles can harmfully interact with biological systems, such as lipid membranes or cell proteins. To enable an uptake of such nanoparticles by cells without harming their membranes, platinum nanoparticles were(More)
Mid-infrared spectroscopy is a widely used tool for material identification and secondary structure analysis in chemistry, biology and biochemistry. However, the diffraction limit prevents nanoscale protein studies. Here we introduce mapping of protein structure with 30 nm lateral resolution and sensitivity to individual protein complexes by Fourier(More)
Highy crystalline NiO nanoparticles are uniformly grown on the walls of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at moderate temperature.Their size and stoichiometry are controlled by the ALD process parameters. The obtained NiO/CNT hybrids exhibit excellent performance in the electro-oxidation of methanol.
New uses for ALD: By applying standard metal oxide atomic layer deposition (ALD) to two types of porphyrins, site-specific chemical infiltration of substrate molecules is achieved: Diethylzinc can diffuse into the interior of porphyrin supramolecular structures and induce metalation of the porphyrin molecules from the vapor phase. A = Ph, p-HO(3)SC(6)H(4).
Hierarchical micro-/nano-structures made easy. By using extremely rough, chemically etched microstructured aluminium foils, anodization in phosphoric acid under very harsh conditions, e.g., 10 wt% phosphoric acid and room temperature, can be repeatedly accomplished without suffering from breakdown. As a result, an alumina membrane with a three-dimensionally(More)
