This work provides a mechanism accounting for the fast Cu(OAc)(2)-mediated AAC reactions involving chelating azides, which has apparent practical implications, but suggests the significance of mixed-valency dinuclear copper species in catalytic reactions where two copper centers carry different functions.

Aromatic azide-derived 5,5'-bistriazoles possess rigid axially chiral structures with a broad distribution of dihedral angles, which may be explored as chiral ligands in enantioselective catalysis if decorated with proper functional groups.

The X-ray crystallographic analyses of selected ligands and complexes revealed that the hydrophobic cavities inside the zinc complexes were retained after derivatization, with possible contributions from a planarization of the pyridyl-trimethoxyphenyl groups in the excited state, and from excitonic interactions.
