We present two cases of surgically proved colloid cysts that were more apparent on CT scans than on MR images. These cysts, while hyperdense on CT scans, were nearly isointense with brain on multiple MR sequences. This relative lack of visibility represents a potential pitfall when imaging a patient with headache.
Computerized tomography (CT) has made it easier to distinguish tumoral from nontumoral diseases of the central nervous system. In the presence of mass effect, however, this distinction may be difficult or impossible to make. Primary demyelinating disease may occasionally present as a focal cerebral mass. The authors report three cases of primary… (More)
In a patient with cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed findings of demyelination in the cerebral white matter, which was also hypodense on CT. The MRI abnormality seemed to be clinically significant in this patient with progressive dementia and abnormal gait.
Cyanoacrylate is a satisfactory material for therapeutic embolization, but it has the disadvantage of not being radiopaque and polymerizing within 1 sec after contact with ionic materials. Its behavior was modified with varying concentrations of iophendylate and were able to satisfactorily control its polymerization from 1 to 30 sec. This control should… (More)
The angiographic evaluation of the transient ischemic attack has been technically difficult, time consuming, and complication prone because of underlying arteriosclerosis and other medical diseases. The examination described depends upon small soft catheters, dynamic fluoroscopy for positioning, and selective magnified views of the arteries needed for… (More)
Neuroblastoma, which is primarily an extracranial disease, has remote manifestations which can be confusing. Neurologic signs and symptoms such as opsoclonus (dancing eyes), ataxia, blindness, and cord paralysis may precede by several months the manifestations of the primary tumor in a distant site such as the abdomen. Descriptions of nine cases demonstrate… (More)
Purpose: Therapy for high-grade gliomas remains unsatisfactory. Paclitaxel and topotecan have separately demonstrated activity against gliomas. We conducted a Phase II trial of these agents in combination with filgrastim (G-CSF) in patients with recurrent or refractory glioblastoma multiforme or anaplastic astrocytoma.Patients and Methods: Adult patients… (More)
A new method of filtering MR images is presented that uses wavelet transforms instead of Fourier transforms. The new filtering method does not reduce the sharpness of edges. However, the new method does eliminate any small structures that are similar in size to the noise eliminated. There are many possible extensions of the filter.
Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RTs) are rare, malignant brain tumors which occur almost exclusively in infants and young children. There have been only 17 cases of AT/RT in adults reported in the medical literature and the rarity of this tumor makes the diagnosis in adults difficult. We describe a case of an AT/RT of the spinal cord in an adult. A… (More)
