We studied the general outcome in 94 adult patients with autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (ATP) submitted to splenectomy. Of 84/94 patients who presented a complete or partial response 30 d after splenectomy, 16 (19%) showed one or more relapses. The clinical situation of the 81 patients still under observation is as follows: 13 unresponsive, 60(More)
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The epidemiology of hepatitis A, E, B and C was analyzed in 1,393 children living in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. They were distributed in two groups according to the social condition. MATERIALS AND METHOD 1,393 children were selected from two different schools: one attended by children belonging to a high social class of(More)
STAT1 and STAT3 are the main mediators of the signaling of interferons (IFNs) and of gp130 cytokines, respectively. Neoplastic T lymphocytes frequently become resistant to the IFN-gamma/STAT1 apoptotic pathway, often because of the downregulation of the IFN-gammaR2 receptor chain. Many studies suggest that cross-regulation between different STATs, in(More)
Thyroid function was evaluated in patients affected by Fisher-Evans syndrome (FES) and compared to that of patients affected only by autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) and to that of patients affected only by idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The study population consisted of 20 patients with FES, 44 with AIHA and 20 with ITP. All patients were(More)
Recent literature demonstrates the relationship between psychopathology and medically unexplained pain, even if the results of several studies show a high degree of variability. The present study was planned with the aim of analysing both the possible relationship between the level (low/high) of organicity and the presence of psychopathology, and the degree(More)
Two cases of benzodiazepine-induced thrombocytopenia are described. Drug-dependent antibodies with antiplatelet activity of the IgG class were detected by inhibition of complement-dependent hemolysis. This technique permitted also the demonstration of cross-reactivity of these antibodies with different benzodiazepines.
This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic possibilities of MR arthrography in the correct identification of complex tears of the biceps pulley and their possible correlation with anterosuperior impingement (ASI) development. MR arthrography examinations of 23 athletes with clinical suspicion of ASI were reviewed. All examinations were obtained with a(More)
The impact of prognostic markers on disease-free and overall survival reflects their relative role in tumour biology. Breast cancer and colon carcinoma can be taken as examples to demonstrate the clinical and biological relevance of 'new markers' of neoplastic disease. In breast cancer, receptor-bound urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and its(More)
The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of diagnostic imaging in the identification, localization, and characterization of soft-tissue inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) of limbs with correlation to differential diagnosis and therapy. From a retrospective analysis of 324 histologically verified soft-tissue lesions of limbs and(More)
