BACKGROUND Apoptosis is one of the major events following total androgen blockade (TAB). The aim of this study was to determine the predictive value of some histological parameters including apoptosis and gene products which influence apoptosis, based on repeated biopsies taken from the same patients. METHODS At the time of diagnosis by needle biopsy TNM(More)
Changes of platelet aggregation in relation to macroangiopathy and to some of its risk factors were observed in microangiopathy-free, well-controlled type 1 diabetic males. Platelet aggregate ratio was generally lower in patients (n = 77) than in age-matched healthy subjects (n = 48). In the absence of cigarette smoking, hypertension, obesity and(More)
For evaluating the clinical significance of QT interval prolongation in diabetics with cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN), 53 diabetic patients were followed-up for 5 years or to death and the results of cardiovascular function tests as well as the values of QT intervals were repeatedly determined. At baseline investigation, the QTc intervals were(More)
All the sleep-promoting substances currently identified also have other biological activities. Despite years of effort, a single specific central nervous system sleep center has not been described. These observations led us to propose a biochemical model of a sleep activational system in which the effects of several sleep factors are integrated into a(More)
For assessment of clinical and prognostic values of cardiac autonomic neuropathy, 53 patients with diabetes mellitus were followed-up for five years. Parasympathetic innervation was assessed by recording heart rate variability during deep breathing, Valsalva manoeuvre and lying-to-standing while sympathetic function was evaluated by measuring postural(More)
We have observed 741 mediastinal tumors during the past 25 years. Among these tumors, two intrathoracic vagal tumors were found; one bilateral neurofibrosarcoma and one neurilemmoma. To date, 49 intrathoracic vagal tumors have been reported in the literature, and the neurofibrosarcoma described here is the fourth malignant vagal tumor reported.
Signs of autonomic cardiac neuropathy and its association with distal somatic neuropathy were investigated in 36 type 1 and 28 type 2 diabetic patients free from clinical symptoms of autonomic neuropathy. Using bedside tests (deep-breathing, Valsalva manoeuvre and lying-to-standing) definitive cardiac autonomic neuropathy was found in 28 patients (44%),(More)
OBJECTIVES Recent reports have unambiguously identified the presence and the growth-modulatory role of transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1), a central integrator of pain sensation, on numerous non-neuronal cell types and, of great importance, in certain malignancies. In this study, we have investigated the molecular expression of TRPV1 in the(More)
Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colorectal Carcinoma (HNPCC) is the most frequent inherited disease which can lead to the development of tumors in the colon and other locations. Its genetic basis is related to the germline mutation of the Mismatch Repair (MMR) genes. Muir-Torre syndrome is considered one of the subtypes of this disease, in which the HNPCC tumor(More)
