Continental-Scale Effects of Nutrient Pollution on Stream Ecosystem Functioning
- G. Woodward, M. Gessner, É. Chauvet
- Environmental ScienceScience
- 15 June 2012
Dramatically slowed breakdown at both extremes of the gradient indicated strong nutrient limitation in unaffected systems, potential for strong stimulation in moderately altered systems, and inhibition in highly polluted streams, emphasizing the need to complement established structural approaches with functional measures for assessing ecosystem health.
Nutrient retention in riparian ecotones

Nutrient retention mechanisms in riparian buffer strips are reviewed with emphasis on surface runoff and subsurface flows, the main pathways of exchanges between the stream and its surroundings. Un…

1. Denitrification in floodplain soils is one of the main biological processes emitting and reducing nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas, and the main process responsible for the buffering capacity of…
Global patterns and drivers of ecosystem functioning in rivers and riparian zones

It is found that Earth’s biomes have distinct carbon processing signatures, and slow processing is evident across latitudes, whereas rapid rates are restricted to lower latitudes.

EFFECTS OF LEAF‐LITTER ACCUMULATION ON RIPARIAN PLANT DIVERSITY ACROSS EUROPE
- C. Nilsson, Shaojun Xiong, M. Johansson, L. Vought
- Environmental Science
- 1 July 1999
Floods in rivers can deposit large quantities of organic debris in the riparian corridor and cause considerable change to its vegetation. We studied the importance of leaf-litter accumulation on…
