AlgT (ς22) Controls Alginate Production and Tolerance to Environmental Stress inPseudomonas syringae
A genetic approach was used to evaluate the role of alginate in the pathogenicity and epiphytic fitness of P. syringae pv.
AlgT (sigma22) controls alginate production and tolerance to environmental stress in Pseudomonas syringae.
AlgT mutant of P. syringae was defective in alginate production but could be complemented with wild-type algT from P. aeruginosa when expressed in trans and stimulated by osmotic stress and by exposure to paraquat, H(2)O(2), and copper sulfate.
Identification and Characterization of Pestalotiopsis spp. Causing Scab Disease of Guava, Psidium guajava, in Hawaii.
- L. Keith, M. E. Velasquez, F. Zee
- Biology, MedicinePlant Disease
- 2006
This is the first report of traditional and molecular methods of identification and characterization being used for fungal pathogens of guava in Hawaii, and the main fungi consistently isolated from symptomatic leaves and fruit were Pestalotiopsis spp.
Association of Enterobacter cloacae with Rhizome Rot of Edible Ginger in Hawaii.
- K. Nishijima, A. Alvarez, F. Zee
- Biology, MedicinePlant Disease
- 1 December 2004
Rhizome quality may be impacted by the presence of E. cloacae under conditions such as high temperature, high relative humidity, and low oxygen atmosphere that may affect the development of decay, and such conditions should be avoided during post-harvest handling and storage.
Screening promoters for Anthurium transformation using transient expression
- T. Matsumoto, L. Keith, R. Cabos, J. Suzuki, D. Gonsalves, R. Thilmony
- Biology, MedicinePlant Cell Reports
- 3 January 2013
This research has rapidly identified multiple promoters that express in various anthurium tissues facilitating the development of transformation vectors for the expression of desirable traits in anthuria plants.
New Ceratocystis species associated with rapid death of Metrosideros polymorpha in Hawai’i
Morphology and interfertility tests support the delineation of these two new species of Ceratocystis and pathogenicity tests show that both species are aggressive pathogens on seedlings of M. polymorpha.
Alginate gene expression by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 in host and non-host plants.
- R. Keith, L. Keith, G. Hernández-Guzmán, S. R. Uppalapati, C. Bender
- BiologyMicrobiology
- 1 May 2003
Monitoring alginate gene expression in host and non-host plants inoculated with P. syringae indicates that algD is expressed in both susceptible (e.g. collard, tomato) and resistant (Rio Grande-PtoR) host plants.
RpoN (σ54) is required for plasmid-encoded coronatine biosynthesis in Pseudomonas syringae

Isolation and Characterization of Burkholderia gladioli from Orchids in Hawaii.
Field and laboratory data suggest the frequent use of these chemicals in nurseries may have inadvertently resulted in the development of copper and streptomycin resistance in B. gladioli from orchids.
Dolabra nepheliae on rambutan and lychee represents a novel lineage of phytopathogenic Eurotiomycetes
- A. Rossman, C. Schoch, D. Farr, K. Nishijima, L. Keith, R. Goenaga
- BiologyMycoscience
- 1 July 2010
It was determined that D. nepheliae represents a new lineage within the Eurotiomycetes allied with Phaeomoniella chlamydospora, the causal agent of Petri grapevine decline.
