Chromosomal polymorphism and racial evolution of Sorex uruneus L. in Finland
Six chromosomal races with different combinations of arms, g, h, k, m, n, o, q and r were found to form chromosomes nos 3,5,7 and 8, suggesting that these races may have evolved from a common ancestral karyotype through a series of reciprocal translocations. Expand
Selection often overrides the effects of random processes in island populations of Philaenus spumarius (Homoptera)
The influence of various evolutionary factors on the populations of the colour polymorphic meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius, was investigated on islands in the Gulf of Finland, and it is highly probable that the factor operating is meadow-specific selection. Expand
Chromosome banding pattern in a polymorphic population of Sorex araneus from northeastern Finland.
The banding pattern of race C is presented and proposed as a basis for comparisons between chromosomal races of Sorex araneus and polymorphism was slightly more restricted than in another race C population investigated by Fredga. Expand
The genetic basis of balanced polymorphism in Philaenus (Homoptera)
Evidence is presented for the hypothesis, here advanced explicitly for the first time, that the colour genes are components of supergenes, and certain assumptions are made to support the hypothesis that alleles high in the dominance hierarchy are of more recent origin than alleles at or near the bottom. The founder principle, founder selection, and evolutionary divergence and convergence in natural populations of Philaenus.
Parts of the archipelago of the Baltic Sea are rising above the water level at a steady, slow rate, and an early stage and a late stage can be distinguished in the development of meadows on the islands, which can be said to go through a divergence phase followed by a convergence phase. Expand
Radial and peripheral clines in northern polymorphic populations of Philaenus spumarius.
Geographic variability in the colour polymorphism of Philaenus spumarius (Homoptera) was investigated in the northern parts of Finland, Norway and Sweden. The investigation was directed mainly atExpand
Chromosome counts in the Carex flava complex (Cyperaceae) in Finland
Chromosome numbers from 17 Finnish populations of six taxa in the Carex flava complex were examined, finding severely disturbed meiosis with many uni- and multivalents in the hybrid C. flava×kotilaini, which probably consitute a specific cytotype. Expand
Accumulation of gene products in the oocytes of the dragonfly Cordulia aenea. II. Induction of annulate lamellae within dense masses during diapause.
During the 3 years of nymphal development of the dragonfly Cordulia aenea, gene products slowly accumulate in the cytoplasm of the previtellogenic oocytes, and the formation of annulate lamellae may be related to activation of some genetic message stored in the dense masses. Expand
