Recommendations for the routine sampling of diatoms for water quality assessments in Europe
The principles and practice of sampling are described in relation to the main habitat types encountered in Europe, and it is hoped that these provide a framework that can be adapted to most river types in Europe.
Distribution, ecology and nuisance effects of the freshwater invasive diatom Didymosphenia geminata (Lyngbye) M. Schmidt: a literature review.
The historic and current biogeographic range of this invasive species (and varieties) based on 1000 citations collected mainly from the scientific literature are investigated, confirming that the native range of D. geminata is almost restricted to the Holarctic region, though its distribution area is broader than usually reported in the literature.
Morphological abnormalities of diatom silica walls in relation to heavy metal contamination and artificial growth conditions
Teratological forms of diatoms are non-adaptive phenotypic abnormalities caused by various environmental stresses. Heavy metal contamination and artificial growth conditions are the best known
Diatom teratological forms and environmental alterations: a review
In this review, 222 articles are analyzed with the aim to correlate the abnormal diatom cell morphology to environmental alterations, in a perspective which can greatly enhance the evaluation of river environmental quality for biomonitoring purposes.
Centric diatoms of large rivers and tributaries in Hungary: morphology and biogeographic distribution
Abstract Centric diatoms of 107 different Hungarian running waters were investigated. Among them the largest was the River Danube, from which more than one hundred plankton samples were analysed by
A comparison of national approaches to setting ecological status boundaries in phytobenthos assessment for the European Water Framework Directive: results of an intercalibration exercise
The European Union (EU)’s Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires that all Member States participate in intercalibration exercises in order to ensure that ecological status concepts and assessment
Epiphytic diatoms as water quality indicators in Spanish shallow lakes
La Directive Cadre sur l'Eau (WFD) exige que les pays membres de l'Union Europeenne determinent l'etat biologique des eaux continentales en reference a des sites de haute qualite. Meme si les
Diatom flora in subterranean ecosystems: a review
*elisa.falasco@unito.it abundance and diversity of organisms (Holsinger, 1998) and the abiotic conditions at the deeper parts of the caves are generally more stable. In the absence of light and
Impact of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) on Water Quality, Stream Sediments and Periphytic Diatom Communities in the Surrounding Streams of Aljustrel Mining Area (Portugal)
Aljustrel mining area is located in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, one of the greatest concentrations of massive sulphide deposits that extends from Lousal (Portugal) to Aznalcóllar (Spain). The
Pantocsekiella, a new centric diatom genus based on morphological and genetic studies
The new genus Pantocsekiella is described, which has distinctive morphological features: striae unequal in length, central area without areolae, and several Lindavia taxa are transferred into it.
