An established line of fish cells has been propagated in vitro for 21 months and 48 subcultivations. Important characteristics of the cells are described.
A virus from fish with lymphocystis disease was isolated in fish cell cultures. Eleven serial transfers were made and the pathognomonic lymphocystis cells were produced in vitro in each transfer. Fish inoculated with 6th- and 9th-passage material developed the disease, and virus was reisolated front them.
For 80 years the infectivity of salmonid whirling disease has eluded discovery. A line of fibroblast cells has been established from tongue tissue of the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana). The cells are near-triploid and were subcultured 57 times during the 2(2/3) years of their existence. Some of their characteristics are described.
Egtved and infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) viruses were applied at high multiplicity alone and in combination to RTG-2 cells in liquid medium. A series of 13 integrated precepts is used in a system for managing continuous laboratory propagation of poikilothermic vertebrate cell lines. The precepts are listed in sequence of application and discussed.
Azithromycin, doxycycline, and rifampin, alone or in combination, were tested in vitro against Chlamydia pneumoniae AR-39. The combination of azithromycin plus rifampin showed the strongest activity and produced higher rates of eradication of C. pneumoniae from lung tissues than azithromycin alone in experimental mouse pneumonitis.
