Prolyl-phenylalanine-specific serine protease (dentilisin) is a major extracellular protease produced by Treponema denticola. The gene, prtP, coding for the protease was recently cloned and sequenced (K. Ishihara, T. Miura, H. K. Kuramitsu, and K. Okuda, Infect. Immun. 64:5178-5186, 1996). In order to determine the role of this protease in the physiology(More)
Galanin (GAL), a 29-amino-acid neuropeptide, is involved in various neuronal functions, including the regulation of food intake, hormone secretion and central cardiovascular regulation. The nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) is known to plays a major role in the regulation of cardiovascular, respiratory, gustatory, hepatic and swallowing functions.(More)
We have isolated and characterized a neutral phosphatase gene, phoN, from Treponema denticola ATCC 35405. The gene was isolated from a T. denticola clone bank constructed in the medium-copy-number plasmid vector pMCL19. Subcloning and nucleotide sequencing of the DNA insert from one phosphatase clone, pTph14, revealed that the activity corresponded to an(More)
Periodontitis is a polymicrobial infection caused by selected gram-negative bacteria including Porphyromonas gingivalis. Host cell invasion by P. gingivalis has been proposed as a possible mechanism of pathogenesis in periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of periodontopathogens on P. gingivalis invasion of gingival(More)
BACKGROUND Smoking is a risk factor for periodontitis. To clarify the contribution of smoking to periodontitis, it is essential to assess the relationship between smoking and the subgingival microflora. The aim of this study was to gain an insight into the influence of smoking on the microflora of Japanese patients with periodontitis. METHODS Sixty-seven(More)
BACKGROUND A number of studies have revealed a link between chronic periodontitis and cardiovascular disease in obese patients. However, there is little information about the influence of periodontitis-associated bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), on pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in obesity. METHODS In vivo experiment: C57BL/6J mice were fed with(More)
Periodontopathic bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Tannerella forsythia, Campylobacter rectus and Treponema denticola play an important role in the initiation and progression of periodontitis. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the relationship between periodontal clinical parameters and the(More)
BACKGROUND Porphyromonas gingivalis has been implicated as a major pathogen in the development and progression of chronic periodontitis. P. gingivalis biofilm formation in the subgingival crevice plays an important role in the ability of the bacteria to tolerate stress signals outside the cytoplasmic membrane. Some bacteria use a distinct subfamily of sigma(More)
OBJECTIVE Neurotrophins, such as nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), promote neuronal development and neuronal survival, but their mechanisms remain controversial. This study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that NGF and BDNF interfere with angiotensin-II- and glutamate-induced facilitation of voltage-dependent Ca(2+)(More)
Vinculin, a 116-kDa membrane cytoskeletal protein, is an important molecule for cell adhesion; however, little is known about its other cellular functions. Here, we demonstrated that vinculin binds to Rab5 and is required for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) uptake in cells. Viunculin directly bound to Rab5 and enhanced the activation of S. aureus uptake.(More)
