Phylogenetic analyses of these sequences using Actinidia chinensis as the outgroup indicate that the Rhododendroideae are paraphyletic, and trees obtained in the analyses indicate an expanded rhododendroid clade that includes four major subclades - empetroid, rhodo, ericoid, and phyllodocoid.
