Thioviridamide showed cytotoxicity selectively against 3Y1 rat fibroblasts transformed with adenovirus oncogenes and significant numbers of Ad12-3Y1 cells treated with thiovirIDamide contained condensed chromatin and fragmented nuclei, indicating that thiovIRidamide induced apoptosis.

In the course of the screening program for substances which protect rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells from LDOPA toxicity, a novel compound designated as halxazone is isolated from an actinomycete identified as Streptomyces halstedii 4029-SVS1, which was isolated from a soil sample collected in Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan.
