Evaluation of performance with the COMBI40 cochlear implant in adults: a multicentric clinical study.
The present multicentric clinical study involves 19 centres, 16 of them in German-speaking countries, 1 British, 1 Polish and 1 Hungarian, and involves 60 postlingually deafened adults evaluated with the MED-EL COMBI 40 cochlear implant which implements a high-rate continuous-interleaved-sampling strategy with 8 channels. The efferent modulation of mammalian inner hair cell afferents
The hypothesis that acetylcholine and GABA are involved in efferent neurotransmission on inner hair cell afferent fibres is supported, however, it should be pointed out that several opioids such as enkephalins and dynorphins seem to be involved inefferent cochlear innervation. Expand
Human posture is the result of a complex control system. The joint output of several physiological — most likely nonlinearly interacting — processes leads to constant correctional movements whichExpand
Scaling-violation phenomena and fractality in the human posture control systems.
It is shown that scaling behavior becomes close to perfect, when correctional movements are dominated by the vestibular system and the wavelet-variance function opens the possibility to relate scaling violations to different modes of posture control. Expand
Analysis of 60 patients after tympanotomy and sealing of the round window membrane after acute unilateral sensorineural hearing loss.
Tympanotomy and sealing of the round window membrane can be recommended in cases of acute hearing loss after failure of conservative treatment and in patients with barotrauma, time of surgery seems to have an influence on outcome. Expand
Multiple aspects related to self-awareness and the awareness of others: an electroencephalography study
It is interpreted that EEG recordings reveal two relevant areas, which are sensitive to the concept of a person between about 250 ms and 400 ms after stimulus onset, which can distinguish between personal engagement and a neutral condition and the other area is located in the temporal region and is able to distinguish between oneself and somebody else. Speech understanding in quiet and in noise with the CIS speech coding strategy (MED-EL Combi-40) compared to the multipeak and spectral peak strategies (nucleus).
The results show that the spectral-peak (SPEAK) and continuous-interleaved-sampling (CIS) coding strategies, based on spectral signal analysis, allow for better speech understanding in quiet as well as in noise, than the multipeak (MPEak) coding strategy, which relys on speech feature extraction. Cochlear implant deep electrode insertion: extent of insertional trauma.
Deep electrode insertions do not aggravate the insertional trauma provided no force is applied when resistance is felt, and in most cases, only very discrete distortions of the epithelium of the spiral ligament occurred within the middle cochlear turns. Expand
Caroverine in tinnitus treatment. A placebo-controlled blind study.
The results confirm the working hypothesis on the genesis of cochlear-synaptic tinnitus that caroverine acted as a potent competitive alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazone-proprionic acid (AMPA) receptor antagonist and, in higher dosages, a non-competitive N- methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist. Dopamine regulates the glutamatergic inner hair cell activity in guinea pigs
Results show that DA can depress the activated firing rate of the afferent fibres and that this action is mediated by both D1- and D2-receptor subtypes. Expand
