This research presents a meta-analyses of the immune system’s response to exposure to radiation and shows clear patterns of decline in the immune systems of men and women aged 65 and over.
The Fas system is a key regulator of germ cell apoptosis in the testis.
The mammalian SIR2alpha protein has a role in embryogenesis and gametogenesis.
No evidence for failure of gene silencing is found in sir2alpha null animals, suggesting that either SIR2alpha has a different role in mammals than it does in Saccharomyces cerevisiae or that its role is confined to a small subset of mammalian genes.

Data support the following hypotheses: 1) up-regulation of Fas is a common and critical step for initiating germ cell death in vivo; and 2) if Sertoli cells are injured, SERToli cells up-regulate FasL to eliminate Fas-positive germ cells, which cannot be supported adequately.
Mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate rapidly alters both Sertoli cell vimentin filaments and germ cell apoptosis in young rat testes.
The early collapse in Sertoli cell vimentin filaments and the concurrent decrease in germ cell apoptosis suggests that MEHP engenders Sertolis cell dysfunction resulting in the disruption of the physiological mechanism of germ cell suicides.

Type 1 protein phosphatases (PP1) are involved in diverse cellular activities, ranging from glycogen metabolism to chromatin structure modification, mitosis, and meiosis, and defects in meiosis were inferred from the presence of polyploid spermatids.
